Hexion's bisphenol A safe from PC scare - CEO

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US firm Hexion Specialty Chemicals does not expect that its production of bisphenol A (BPA) would be affected by recent concerns about the material's safety, the company's executive said on Wednesday.

Recently, consumers and politicians have feared that BPA could leak out of baby bottles and other beverage containers made with polycarbonate (PC). They fear that consumers could be harmed if too much BPA leaks out of containers made with PC.

However, PC represents only 1% of Hexion's BPA sales, said Craig Morrison, Hexion chief executive.

The rest of Hexion's BPA is used in industrial applications, such as coatings and composites, which would not come under the same scrutiny as baby bottles, Morrison said. In fact, much of Hexion's BPA is used internally.

"We don't see a large financial impact," Morrison said.

Nonetheless, Hexion is working with the industry to provide more information about BPA to consumers, he said. "Scientifically, this is a very widely used chemical product that we believe is very safe."
