HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Rentech on Thursday announced it has entered an agreement with The Wilds wildlife conservation centre to study the environmental impact of non-food crops for fuel production.

“The results of this study will greatly enhance our understanding of how various types of biomass can be used to achieve fuel production with a neutral, or possibly negative, carbon footprint with minimal adverse effect on the ecosystem,” Rentech CEO D. Hunt Ramsbottom said in a statement.

The collaboration, which will also include Ohio State University, will be conducted on reclaimed mine lands at the Wilds in Cumberland, Ohio.

The study will also examine the utilisation of marginal landscapes for the production of perennial, non-food based biofuels, and the potential for bio-sequestration of carbon and other environmental services on reclaimed land.
