LONDON (ICIS news)--A new port tariff set to come into effect across all Turkish ports from Tuesday has been postponed until 1 September, Ankara's undersecretariat for maritime affairs said.

The delay was due to serious objections from port agents and owners in the region, according to the Merkez Beniz Port Agency.

“We rejected the original proposal and there still remains some serious question marks regarding the tariff,” a spokesman for the agency said.

A chemical trader in the region said amendments to the tariff would be required if all parties were to be satisfied by 1 September.

“Changes will need to be made to ensure that the tariff is passed through in September”, he said.

The new tariff would see the euro replace the US dollar at all Turkish ports with rates, expected to rise substantially in the process.

Pilotage, tugboat, mooring boat and anchorage dues would all increase under the new legislation and overtime surcharges of between 10% and 30% would be added to their base fees.
