SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--China-based Zhoushan Hebon Chem Co. Ltd, is operating its new aromatics unit at 80-90% currently in Zhoushan city, Zhejiang province in east China, a source close to the company said on Wednesday.

The company increased the operating rate of its aromatics unit recently upon achieving on-spec production of benzene, toluene and xylene on Tuesday.

The aromatics unit is capable of producing 50,000 tonnes/year of benzene, 150,000 tonnes/year of toluene and 200,000 tonnes/year of xylene at full capacity.

“By 2010, the estimated domestic benzene supply is around 3.6m tonnes/year while demand is about 3.85m tonnes/year . As for toluene, domestic supply is currently only at 1.1m tonnes/year, while demand is expected to increase to 2.1m tonnes/year by 2010. Therefore, in my opinion, Hebon Chem has bright prospects.,” Zhoushan Daily quoted Wang Encai, vice manager of the company as saying.

Presently, domestic toluene supply remains tight however, the new aromatics unit would relieve the tight situation to some extent, traders said.
