SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--The Asian Petrochemical Industry Conference (APIC) here on 27-28 May is expected to draw more than 1,200 delegates compared with more than 900 in past years, officials from the Singapore Chemical Industry Council (SCIC) said on Monday.

The conference has attracted delegates from 34 countries, including as far afield as Brazil, Mexico and South Africa, SCIC chairman A Chockalingam said in a briefing.

The largest delegation will be from Japan, with 265 already registered, but the contingent from China is expected to be significant too, with more than 50 participants. The massive earthquake in Sichuan did not result in any cancellations, he added.

Despite its large contingent of delegates, China is yet to be part of APIC.

China is becoming a major player but we have to see how things develop,” Chockalingam said.

Formerly known as the East Asia Petrochemical Industry Conference (EAPIC) and organised between Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, it was renamed APIC in 2000 and extended to India, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.

APIC is currently organised on a rotational basis by the seven countries. Last year it was held it Taipei. SCIC is the official body representing the private sector of Singapore’s chemical industry.

ICIS and The Chemical Daily have produced an official 84-page, special publication on Asian petrochemicals for the APIC event
