SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Mitsubishi Chemical Corp’s (MCC) new 800,000 tonne/year purified terephthalic acid (PTA) line in Haldia on the east coast of India, will start up in January 2009, said a source from the company on Tuesday.

"Construction on this new plant began in 2006. We spent $370m (€233m) to build it," the source added on the sidelines of the Asia Petrochemical Industry Conference (APIC) in Singapore.

The unit’s total PTA output would be utilised for domestic purposes, the source said, adding that the paraxylene (PX) feedstock for the new facility would be imported.

The firm was currently in discussions with PX suppliers from the Middle East and southeast Asia, the source said.

ICIS news had earlier reported that MCC planned to complete the second PTA line by July 2008.

MCC owns and operates another 470,000 tonne/year PTA plant at the same location in India.

PTA is used to manufacture polyester fibre and yarns and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) chips.
