SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--India’s imports of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) are expected to jump to 474,000 tonnes year on year from 51,000 tonnes in 2007, said a source from Mitsubishi Chemical Corp (MCC) on Tuesday.
“There are no new PTA capacities coming on line in India this year and the only new plant to start running is our 800,000 tonne/year PTA line in Haldia next year,” the source said on the sidelines of the Asia Petrochemical Industry Conference (APIC) in Singapore.
According to statistics provided by MCC at APIC, India’s polyester sector was expected to grow by a maximum of 20% in 2008, resulting in a total PTA requirement of 3.27m tonnes for the year.
Market watchers predicted an annual growth rate of 10-15% for India’s polyester industry this year.
India’s three domestic PTA producers - Reliance, Indian Oil Company (IOC) and MCC - have a current combined output of 2.8m tonnes/year, leaving the country with a shortfall of some 474,000 tonnes of molecules.
PTA is used in the manufacture of polyester fibre and yarns and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) chips.
The two-day conference runs from May 27-28.
ICIS and The Chemical Daily have produced an official 84-page special publication on Asian petrochemicals for the APIC event
