MUMBAI (ICIS news)--BASF plans to set up a 60,000 tonne/year sodium methylate plant in Guaratingueta, Brazil to expand the company’s market in the region, the German chemical major said on Wednesday.
Sodium methylate, an efficient catalyst for biodiesel production, could see a rise in demand in line with the global increase in the requirement for biodiesel, it added
"We expect annual global demand for biodiesel to increase to about 18bn tonnes in coming years. About 15% of this amount will come from South America," said Ulrich Büschges, group vice president for BASF global business unit Inorganic Specialties.
"Legislation planned in Brazil will require fuel to contain 3% biodiesel by 2013, and this figure is set to rise to 5%. Argentina has mandated that biodiesel makes up 5% of fuel by 2010," BASF added
