SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--The Japanese petrochemical industry is keen to develop new technology to recover low-temperature exhaustion heat as part of a plan to protect the environment, said Sumitomo Chemical president Hiromasa Yonekura on Wednesday.

The HEART [heat recovery technology] project, which is a joint undertaking by the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association (JPCA), of which Yonekura is the chairman, “will reduce heat loss by 10% over 10 years,” he said at the Asia Petrochemical Industry Conference (APIC).

He said the sector approach is expected to “save 1% of energy consumption every year for 10 years”, adding that “60% of the reduction - of greenhouse gases [GHG] emissions - needs to be achieved through innovative new technologies”.

The other 40% reduction in GHG emissions will require a global commitment of “all major emitting countries [including the US and China] and developing countries” to establish a “new framework contributing to both environmental and economic growth”.

Japan has developed a plan, under which it plans a 50% cutback on GHG emissions by 2050.
