LONDON (ICIS news)--Akzo Nobel Functional Chemicals is relocating its chelates business from the Netherlands to Shanghai to focus on customers in Asia, the company said on Wednesday.

“It is extremely important for us to be in close proximity to our customers in China and the Asia Pacific Region,” said functional chemicals general manager Bob Margevich.

The business would move head office during the summer, with chelates general manager Geert Hofman taking on the additional role of functional chemicals’ administrative representative for Asia Pacific.

Hofman said Functional Chemicals would be the predominant user of a €250m ($392m) grassroots multi-site currently being built in China by Akzo Nobel. Located in Ningbo, it will include facilities for the production of chelating agents and ethylene amines.

Chelating agents are used to help metal ions stay in solution or to prevent metals from performing undesirable reactions in applications such as cleaning, food, personal care and pharmaceuticals.
