SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--Over 3,000 tonnes of dangerous chemicals found in Shifang Chemical Industry Park in quake-hit Sichuan province in southwest China was immediately moved to a safer location, an official from Shifang Environmental Protection Bureau said on Monday.

The chemicals included phosphorus yellow, concentrated sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and liquid ammonia.

“We have shifted the chemicals to companies and brokers who may have commercial use for them. The bureau is currently keeping a close watch on any potential dangers in chemical plants” the official said.

“Identified potential safety and environment hazards have been removed,” a second source from Shifang Environmental Protection Bureau said.

Local chemical companies which were damaged by the quake remained shut, he added.

The government had previously required local chemicals companies to take measures to remove all kinds of safety hazards.

The safety of the quake victims is of top priority, an official from Ministry of Environmental Protection said today.

Shifang, the nearest county to the epicenter of Wenchuan, saw half of the city devastated during the 8.0-magnitude earthquake on 12 May in the south-western province of Sichuan.

Nearly 70,000 are dead and 18,830 people missing in the massive earthquake according to the latest official death toll.
