TOKYO (ICIS news)--Idemitsu Kosan plans to build a resin compounding factory in Guangzhou, China to meet the rising demand in south China and southeast Asia, the Japanese refiner said on Wednesday.
The plant would produce 10,000 tonnes/year of polycarbonate (PC), syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) and polyphenylene sulphide (PPS), it added in a statement but did not provide any financial details.
Construction of the plant was scheduled to start in October 2008, and the company expected to begin operations in October 2009, Idemitsu said.
The firm also planned to increase the unit’s capacity to 20,000 tonnes/year in 2011, it said, adding that the plant would have a capacity of up to 30,000 tonnes/year.
Demand for PC, SPS and PPS compounds was increasing at a rate of 20%/year in Asia, primarily in south China, Idemitsu said.
PC demand was currently increasing for applications such as liquid crystal displays (LCD) and other electric and electronic products.
In addition, demand for SPS for electrical parts in cars was expected to expand due to an increase in automobile production in China, the company said.
Idemitsu was currently sourcing these resin compounds from companies in Japan, China, the UK and the US, but it had decided to begin production of these compounds to ensure stable supplies of high-quality products to its customers, the company said.
