PALM DESERT, California (ICIS news)—The search for the next president and CEO of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) is well underway and an announcement is expected to be made before September, said chairman Bob Wood on Thursday.

“We have a search committee of officers of the organisation and will start interviewing for the position shortly,” said Wood at the ACC Annual Meeting. “We are confident that we will be prepared to talk in the not-too-distant future.”

Current president and CEO Jack Gerard will stay on with the ACC until September 1 and then take over as president and CEO of the American Petroleum Institute (API) on November 1.

“We expect to announce a new president and CEO before Jack leaves,” said Wood.

Wood commended Gerard for outstanding leadership in his three years at the ACC.

“Jack has done an outstanding job moving the organisation forward,” said Wood, adding that “the organisation and the industry are much more respected in Washington now.”

Gerard’s new position at the API could bring benefits to the US chemical industry as well.

“A lot of the agenda is the same,” said Gerard, pointing to opening up areas in the US Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) for natural gas exploration. “You need a coalition effort among industries to be successful and we will collectively drive the agenda.”

For the next president and CEO of the ACC, the search committee is looking for a “strong leader, willing to get his hands dirty,” said Wood. “It’s about leadership, getting the most out of people, and results.”
