LONDON (ICIS news)--Spanish truck drivers began an indefinite strike over rising diesel prices on Monday which may lead to supply disruption for chemical producers in the region.

Spain’s National Transport Association Federation Fenadismer said the action was launched shortly after midnight, calling for more than 90,000 hauliers to block roads throughout Spain.

Truck drivers have blocked a major motorway, the AP-7, between Catalonia in northeastern Spain and the French border, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Local media has reported that strikers had thrown stones at motorists trying to pass the blockade, smashing windscreens and headlights.

It was reported on Sunday that strikers were planning to target refineries to block off supplies.

Dow Chemical and Repsol YPF - which both have large petrochemicals complexes in the country - said last Friday they were unable to forecast the extent of the disruption, adding that they were working to minimise the impact as much as possible.
