SHANGHAI(ICIS news)--PetroChina temporarily shut an oil pipeline on Tuesday as a precautionary measure to guard against torrents from the Tangjiashan quake lake in Sichuan province, Du Jingshui, the commander in chief of rescue work on the pipeline, was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

The Tangjiashan quake lake near Mianyang city, which was formed after the earthquake on 12 May, contains an estimated 200m cubic metres of water although engineers involved in the drainage effort have reduced levels.

The lake is situated 60km from the 1,252km-long Lanzhou-Chengdu-Chongqing pipeline, which was shut at 1:30pm local time for an indefinite period, the official said.

The pipeline transports 6m tonnes/year of fuel and currently provides 70% of oil product supplies to the southwestern province of Sichuan.
