HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Bunge's Ultrafertil/Fosfertil plant in southern Brazil is operating normally on Friday in the wake of protests by rural activists on Thursday.

Some 700 protesters surrounded the plant in Araucaria yesterday to protest the rising cost of fertilizer prices, spurring calls for nationalisation of Brazil’s fertilizer production.

Bunge spokesperson Stewart Lindsay said the protest was just one of “a number of protests around the country” held by the  Landless Workers Movement (MST).

Separately on Friday, Brazilian agriculture minister Reinhold Stephanes said the federal government was formulating ideas for how to contain fertilizer costs, including broader state participation in the sector.

The concern about fertilizer costs comes amid soaring food prices around the world.
