Tronox announces TiO2 surcharges in paper market

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US pigment maker Tronox announced on Friday a 4 cent/lb ($88/tonne) energy surcharge on all of its titanium dioxide (TiO2) products sold into the North American paper market.
The move comes just one day after TiO2 producer Cristal Global announced similar surcharges on its products for the domestic paper market.
As with price-increase efforts from other producers, Tronox said its surcharge and previously announced increases were necessary to offset unprecedented increases in raw material, energy and transportation costs.
Tronox is the world's third-largest producer of TiO2, an inorganic white pigment used in products including paints, coatings, paper and plastics.
A total of 17 cents/lb in price initiatives has been proposed by North American producers since July 2007, but only 2-3 cents/lb has been gained from the smaller plastics-compounding segment of TiO2 consumers.
US contract prices for TiO2 have remained flat for most of the past year at 98-108 cents/lb, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.
Other US TiO2 producers include DuPont, Huntsman and Kronos.
