HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Brazilian chemical producers cut their carbon dioxide (C02) emissions in 2007 by 6.7% compared with 2006, national chemical producers association Abiquim said on Wednesday.

Producers reduced 350kg of C02 emissions for every tonne of chemicals produced.

From 2001-2007, C02 emissions by Brazilian chemical producers have fallen 15.7%, primarily as a result of the reduction in using fossil fuels, Abiquim said.

Water use fell 25% from 2001-2007, generating savings of Brazilian reais (R)1.56/tonne ($0.98/tonne, €0.62/tonne) of chemicals produced.

The drop in water consumption is attributed to improvements in industrial processes and an increase in the number of companies that use closed circuit flow systems, which increased the amount of recycling an average of 31.5%, Abiquim said.

Energy consumption fell 25% from 2001-2007, Abiquim said.

“The economies are a result primarily, of investments in modernisation of industrial equipment and the search for energy efficiency,” coordinator Antonio Rollo of the responsible action committee of Abiquim.

Workforce accidents were also on the decline in this period, while transport accidents and spills were broadly stable, Abiquim said.
