BANGKOK (ICIS news)--Turkey's imports of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were set to increase by 59% over the next three years, a senior industry official said on Thursday.

"In 2007, Turkey imported 692,000 tonnes/year of PVC. By 2010, imports into Turkey are estimated to total close to 1.1m tonnes/year," said Faruk Erkoc, chairman of Turkish trading company Penta Petrokimya, at the 12th Asian Chlor-alkali Conference here.

Demand surged by 13.7% in 2007 year on year, to 842,000 tonnes/year, while domestic capacity remained static at 150,000 tonnes/year, Erkoc said.

"The most dominant exporter of suspension or pipe grade PVC to Turkey is Taiwan, whose exports to Turkey almost tripled in 2007 to 85,465 tonnes," said Erkoc.

US exports of this grade to Turkey also tripled to 63,532 tonnes in the same period, he added.

The two-day conference, organised by ICIS and Tecnon OrbiChem, ends on Friday.
