TOKYO (ICIS news)--Tokuyama Corp plans to double its capacity for the production of fumed silica in Zhejiang, China, to 10,000 tonnes/year for an investment of $43m due to robust demand in the country and elsewhere in China, the Japanese chemical producer said on Monday.

The new unit, to be operated by subsidiary Tokuyama Chemicals (Zhejiang) Co, would have the capacity to produce 5,000 tonnes/year of fumed silica called Reolosil, the company said.

Construction of the plant was scheduled to start in August and to be completed in the latter half of 2009, it added.

The company also has another unit at the same location producing 5,000 tonnes/year of fumed silica, which started operations in November 2007.

Demand for the product was growing in Asia, particularly in China, and Tokuyama aimed to carry out strategies to increase the company’s presence in the region by securing the product supply infrastructure in China and Japan, the producer said.

Fumed silica is used for reinforcing elastomers such as silicone rubber.
