SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--Malaysia’s sole methanol producer Petronas plans to shut down its 660,000 tonne/year methanol unit in Labuan for maintenance for 10-12 days in August, a company source said on Wednesday.

The maintenance was being undertaken to upgrade a natural gas pipeline that would also be linked to a newly built 1.7m tonne/year methanol unit in Kedah that was expected to come on stream in October, the source said, adding it would cancel spot cargoes to China in July.

Petronas is one of the main methanol importers to China, making up about 5% of the country’s supplies in 2007.
