BANGKOK (ICIS news)--Thailand’s petrochemical industry is on track to have grown by 16 times between 1990 and 2010, Kriengsak Wongpromrat of the Petroleum Institute of Thailand said on Thursday.

Ethylene will see the maximum growth with capacity increment up to 4m tonnes/year, followed by benzene, paraxylene (PX), purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and polyethylene (PE), he said at the 4th Asian Aromatics and Derivatives Conference.

Dividing the phases of growth into three parts, he said that Thailand’s third wave of petrochemical development was from 2004-2014. The earlier two phases were from 1980-89 and 1989-2004.

In the third phase, olefins will see the maximum capacity expansion, increasing from 55% of production capacity in 2003 to 61% in 2010, he added.

As a result, the share of aromatics production for 2010 would shrink to 38% in the total production from the earlier 46% in 2007.

Downstream products will also see capacity additions by over 2m tonnes between 2007 to 2010, he added.

The 4th Asian Aromatics and Derivatives Conference is being held on 26-27 June in Bangkok.
