TOKYO (ICIS news)--Tosoh Logistics has launched Japan’s biggest ethylene transport vessel with a capacity of 3,500 tonnes of refrigerated C2, its parent Tosoh Corp said on Monday.

The new vessel, named Toyo-maru, which would transport ethylene refrigerated to -103°C, was its third ethylene ship. the others have capacities of 800 tonnes and 1,600 tonnes, the company said.

The vessel would cover destinations within Japan, South Korea, China and elsewhere in east Asia, it added.

The Tosoh group had in the past few years invested a total of yen (Y) 100bn ($952m) into the facilities of vinyl isocyanate chains at its Nanyo factory in Yamaguchi prefecture, and planned to further increase capacities, the company said without elaborating.

The Nanyo factory currently used more than 600,000 tonnes/year of ethylene, and it was expected to increase, the company said.

About a half of Japan’s ethylene was procured by Tosoh, which operated nearly 40 chemical shipping vessels from within Japan, South Korea and other parts of East Asia, it added.

There are about 10 refrigerated ethylene vessels in Japan, according to Tosoh.
