PIC to resume full urea output after gas shortage

LONDON (ICIS news)--Kuwait’s Petrochemical Industries Co (PIC) is set to resume full urea production following a gas shortage that cut urea output by 50%, a company source said on Tuesday.

PIC was forced to reduce urea production by around half at its Shuaiba facility from the second week of May, because of reduced gas supply.

The disruption to gas supply was a result of revamping and construction work at a government-owned power plant about 80km (50 miles) from Shuaiba.

The gas shortage was expected to last through August, but PIC now said full supply would resume on Wednesday 2 July.

As a result, PIC expects to be up to full urea production at Shuaiba within the coming days.

PIC has three urea plants in Shuaiba, which have a total capacity of around 1.04m tonnes/year.

The reduced urea production hindered PIC’s spot sales and also prompted some changes to its shipping schedule.

PIC has long-term agreements with customers in countries including the US, Thailand and Australia.
