LG Chem plans shutdown at Daesan benzene unit

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--South Korean major LG Chem will shut down its 260,000 tonne/year benzene recovery unit in Daesan from mid-August for maintenance, said a company source on Friday.

 

The unit would be taken offline from mid-August for 10-15 days and was expected to restart production from the end of August, he added.

 

Following this shutdown, the Daesan facility would also extract another 50,000 tonnes/year of solvent grade xylene from September, the source said.

 

This would be in addition to the current 55,000 tonnes/year of solvent grade xylene produced at the company’s Yeosu unit. The same facility also produces 220,000 tonnes/year of benzene and 100,000 tonnes/year of toluene.

 

Meanwhile, the company’s Yeosu-based plant was restarted on 25 June after a catalyst change, slightly ahead of the scheduled restart on 27 June, the source added. The plant had been shutdown on 19 June.

 

LG Chem, along with fellow producers, Honam Petrochemical (HPC) and Yeochun Naphtha Cracking Centre (YNCC) are the three main suppliers of solvent grade xylene in South Korea.
