HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Hurricane Bertha was strengthening and could become a Category 2 storm on Monday, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

Bertha is not currently expected to reach the Gulf of Mexico where it could have an impact on the US petrochemical industry.

The storm was strengthening in the Atlantic about 775 miles (1,250km) east of the northern Leeward Islands after having been given hurricane status earlier in the day.

“A gradual turn toward the northwest with a reduction in forward speed is expected over the next couple of days,” the centre said in a bulletin.

Hurricane Bertha formed far off in the Atlantic Ocean, about 845 miles (1,360 km) east of the northern Leeward Islands, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm was moving towards the Atlantic coastline at 15 miles/hour (24 km/hour), the centre said.
