SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Taiwan’s Chimei-Asahi plans to shut its No 1 65,000 tonne/year polycarbonate (PC) unit in Jen Te next week for an earlier-than-expected turnaround, a company official said on Tuesday.

The unit would be taken offline on 15 July for 40-45 days due to “poor economics and high inventory”, the source said, adding that certain parts of the facility would be replaced.

The plant is usually shut for maintenance every two years (http://www.icis.com/Articles/2007/10/25/9072862/Chi-Mei-shuts-Taiwan-PC-plant-for-turnaround.html), but the company has brought forward the scheduled shutdown due to current weak business conditions.

The No 2 75,000 tonne/year unit, which was scheduled for an annual turnaround in October or November, would be running normally during this period and there would be no supply disruption to customers, the source said.

The company operates two units at the site which produce both optical grade and general purpose moulding PC.

Chimei-Asahi is a 90:10 joint venture of Taiwan's Chi Mei Corp and Japan's Asahi Kasei Chemicals.
