SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Singapore-based Vance Bioenergy started up its new 20,000 tonne/year glycerine refinery in Malaysia on 7 July, a senior company official said on Tuesday.

The new glycerine refinery was located next to its 150,000 tonne/year biodiesel plant at Pasir Gudang, Long Tian Ching, managing director of Vance Bioenergy said.

The company has another existing 20,000 tonne/year refining facility at the same site, and the new unit would bring Vance’s total glycerine refining capacity to 40,000 tonnes/year.

"We started the new unit in order to improve logistics and quality of our product in order to serve our current customer base better," Long said, adding that they would refine not only their own off-take from their captive palm methyl ester production, but would also purchase crude glycerine from other biodiesel manufacturers.

Vance's first glycerine refinery, commissioned in September 2007, was currently running at 100%, Long said.

Major producers of refined glycerine in Asia include oleochemical producers like IOI Oleochemical, Kuala Lumpur Kepong (KLK) and Musim Mas, as well as other biodiesel manufacturers like Singapore-based Natural Fuels.
