Silo blast hits Borealis PP output in Belgium

LONDON (ICIS news)--Production at Borealis’ polypropylene (PP) 1 plant at Beringen, Belgium, is down after an explosion in a silo, a company spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

The explosion happened at 08:25 local time (07:25 GMT) and Borealis stopped production at both the PP1 and PP2 plants as a safety measure.

The spokeswoman said the PP2 plant had been restarted after the safety system went off and the site was given the all-clear at 10:00 local time.

Production at the PP1 plant, which is linked to the silo where the explosion happened, was expected to be down for a couple of days, she added.

“This will have no impact on supply,” the spokeswoman said.

No-one was injured in the incident.

Borealis' total PP capacity at Beringen is 365,000 tonnes/year, according to its website.
