SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Indonesia’s sole monoethylene glycol (MEG) maker Polychem plans to shut down its 90,000 tonne/year No 1 line in Merak for a catalyst change next month, a company source said on Friday.

“We will shut down the line around 11 August for two weeks,” he added in Mandarin.

The larger No 2 line, which has an annual capacity of 120,000-125,000 tonnes, would be running as usual during the shut down period.

The company was also considering reducing operating rates at its two units next month if feedstock ethylene prices continued to climb higher, he added.

Spot deals were heard up at $1,700/tonne (€1071/tonne) CFR (cost and freight) southeast Asia this week, alienating some buyers who were now considering cutting production as it was a struggle to pass on the higher costs to their customers.
