HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US imports of isopropanol (IPA) rose in May to 7,908 tonnes, an increase of 45% from 5,438 tonnes during the previous month, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Friday.

Year-over-year, imports were up by 12%.

Canada shipped 7,496 tonnes of the May US imports, with the remaining amount arriving largely from Switzerland, Japan and Korea, the ITC said.

Exports rose only slightly in May to 30,994, an increase of 4% from the previous month. Year-over-year exports were up by 19%.

Among material exported in May, 51% was shipped to Belgium, China and Singapore.

In recent months, IPA supply has tightened in the US due largely to sales controls from most major producers.

US IPA producers include Shell Chemicals, Dow Chemical, LyondellBasell, ExxonMobil and Sasol.
