Panama Canal renews pact with Tampa Port

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The Panama Canal Authority and officials for Florida’s Tampa Port, a major conduit of fertilizer exports, have renewed an agreement to increase trade, the canal authority said on Monday.

The agreement is also aimed at sharing information and promoting an all-water route from Asia to the US East and Gulf coasts via the Panama Canal, the canal authority said in a press release.

The two entities first signed an agreement in 2005 to increase cooperation.

Tampa is Florida’s largest port and handles nearly 50m tons of cargo per year. Its business includes liquid and dry bulk, break bulk, cruise, as well as shipbuilding and repair.

Fertilizer exports and steel imports move in large amounts between Tampa and Asia via the canal, but containers represent the most rapidly growing cargo segment, the Panama Canal said.
