TORONTO (ICIS news)--The Bishop of Magdeburg in Germany’s state of Saxony-Anhalt on Tuesday wrote to soap and adhesives major Henkel, appealing to the company not to close a major detergent production site.

Henkel announced last week it planned to close the site in the town of Genthin in 2009 as it was no longer competitive, affecting some 240 jobs.

Bishop Gerhard Feige said officials had often stated in the past that Genthin had a future as a production site.

Henkel had a reputation as a “family firm” that prioritised the welfare of its workers, he said, adding he therefore remained hopeful the decision to close the facility was not final.

The state government of Saxony-Anhalt said last week it had set up a project group to find a possible investor to assure Genthin’s long-term future.
