LONDON (ICIS news)--Dow Chemical will start its monoethylene glycol (MEG) to ethylene oxide (EO) conversion project from 29 August at its Terneuzen site in the Netherlands, a company source said on Wednesday.

This will be followed by a maintenance turnaround at the EO unit which will commence on 18 September and continue until 4 October, added the seller.

European EO producers said they would keep a close eye on stock levels, speculating that supply could tighten post holidays in September as other European shutdowns were also expected to take place during the same period.

According to market speculation, BASF and Shell’s EO/MEG sites in Ludwigshafen, Germany and Moerdijk, the Netherlands, will enter into a turnaround at the end of August which was expected to last approximately one month.

Following this, Clariant’s EO/MEG unit will go down from 1 October until 21 November so that upstream maintenance work can be carried out, as confirmed by a company source earlier in the week.

Dow’s MEG and EO capacity at Terneuzen was rated at 170,000 tonnes/year and 165,000 tonnes/year respectively.

BASF’s Ludwigshafen site produces 295,000 tonnes/year of EO and 25,000 tonnes/year of MEG.

Shell’s Moerdjik unit has a capacity of 305,000 tonnes/year for EO and 160,000 tonnes/year for MEG, according to ICIS plants and projects.
