SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--Heavy polluters such as metal and petrochemical producers in Beijing are preparing to shut down during the Olympics, said Zheng Jiang, an official at Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, on Friday.

“We have established particular programmes for closing heavy-pollution enterprises and 150 producers are well prepared to suspend operations during Olympics,” he added.

Beijing Dongfang Chemical, a subsidiary of Beijing Eastern Petrochemical, has already stopped production ahead of schedule, said a company source, stopping short of disclosing the date of closure.

In addition, most operations at Yanshan Petrochemical in Beijing had been suspended, said a company source, adding that they will resume production by the end of September.

Following the temporary closure of Beijing Coloring Factory and Beijing Coking Chemical on 15 July, Dongfang Organic Chemical and Beijing Second Chemical Plant had also shut down, the companies said.

All chemical enterprises in the southeast suburb of Beijing had already shut down or been removed away from Beijing, Zheng added.
