HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The 11 June explosion at Goodyear’s styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) plant near the Houston Ship Channel in Texas is expected to have little or no effect on SBR production, a producer said on Friday.

While the US Chemical Safety Board was investigating the cause of the explosion, which killed one worker and injured six others, Goodyear was able to shift production to other units, thus producing little change in output, the producer said.

“It’s always a tragedy when anyone is killed or injured, but from a production standpoint, the company had other units to pick up the slack, so the effect on inventory is likely to be minimal at most,” the producer said.

SBR producers include Goodyear, International Specialty Products (ISP) and Lion Copolymer.
