SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Pakistan exported about 195,000 tonnes of ethanol in the first six months of 2008, more than half the amount it exported for the whole of last year, said a source from a key Pakistani ethanol producer on Wednesday.

This showed healthy growth from the 265,000 tonnes of ethanol exported during the whole of 2007, he added.

Although the exports in the second half of 2008 might be less than the first half, the tota would easily surpass 2007 numbers, he said.

Pakistan produces ethanol from molasses, a by-product of sugar production. Since there is no domestic market for ethanol, most of the local production is exported.

Export volumes increased quite significantly in 2007 as the global consumption for fuel blending picked up.

Pakistan’s exports last year amounted to nearly double the 133,000 tonnes of ethanol exported in 2006, according to the country’s trade statistics.
