TOKYO (ICIS news)--Asahi Kasei halved its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions between April 2007 and March 2008 compared with the 1990 fiscal year, the Japanese chemical producer said in a statement on Friday.
The producer had emitted a total of 5.7m tonnes of CO2 equivalent-GHG during the period, 53% less than the 12.06m tonnes in April 1990-March 1991 period, it said.
The Asahi Kasei group had been participating in the Environment Ministry-led “Team minus 6%” programme, a nationwide effort to cut the level of GHGs by 6% from the levels set in 1990, the base year set by the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, the firm added.
Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda told the Japan National Press Club in early June that the country’s new target was to cut GHG emissions by 60-80% of the current level by 2050.
