SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--PetroChina Sichuan has selected technology from Dow Chemical and Aker Solutions for its planned polypropylene (PP) project in Chengdu, Aker Solutions said on Tuesday.

"UNIPOL polypropylene technology and the advanced SHAC catalyst systems give licensees the capability to achieve economies of scale and offer differentiated products to customers." said Dr Molly Peifang Zhang, the business vice president of Dow Technology Licensing.

He added that with strong annual growth projected for PP over the next few years, global producers like PetroChina would appreciate the advantages of having both large-scale efficiency and the flexibility to adjust production by using the technology.

The 450,000 tonne/year PP complex is part of a 51:49 joint venture of PetroChina and Chengdu Petrochemical for a cost of yuan (CNY) 21bn ($3.07bn).

The complex, which includes an 800,000 tonne/year naphtha cracker and other downstream units, was initially scheduled to be brought on stream in 2009 but was later delayed to 2010 to be started up in tandem with the commissioning of PetroChina’s 10m tonne/year refinery also at the same site.

With the completion of the PP unit, PetroChina will have almost 1m tonnes of PP capacity using UNIPOL technology.
