HOUSTON (ICIS news)--A two-mile portion of the Mississippi river was closed on Wednesday after a damaged barge released more fuel oil, the US Coast Guard said.

The barge, DM 932, had contained up to 420,000 gal (1.59m litres) when it was hit by a ship, Tintomara, on 23 July.

The second spill occurred after the damaged barge had shifted due to falling river levels, the Coast Guard said  An unknown amount of fuel oil was spilled after the barge had shifted, leading to the closure of the river.

Before, the river had been opened as crews continued to make progress cleaning up the spill.

So far, more than 105,000 gal of fuel oil and water have been recovered, the Coast Guard said.
