HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The US could lose 4,000 jobs if plastic bags are taxed or banned, an industry group said on Thursday.
The group, savetheplasticbag.com, was established to challenge what it called misinformation that is being used to support disposable-plastic-bag taxes and bans.
The group said that 85% of such bags used in the US are made domestically. As a result, banning or taxing the bags would cause bag producers to lower production and lay off workers.
"Destroying an American manufacturing industry based on myths and misinformation is irresponsible, absurd and tragic," the group said. "The coalition asks politicians to think carefully about the human cost of voting for a plastic bag tax or ban."
