STOCKHOLM (ICIS news)--About half of the 270-strong workforce at Kemira's plants in Vaasa, Finland, stayed at home on Tuesday in a protest against plans to shut down production facilities there and move jobs to Helsinki, union sources said.

Kemira plans to reorganise its Finnish facilities, which means closure of one or two of the three plants in Vaasa, producing chemicals for water treatment and the pulp and paper industry. The company was planning to reduce the workforce by 155.

The protest was due to end at 18:00 local time when production was expected to return to normal, according to union sources.

“Deliveries to customers will not be affected,” Kemira spokesperson Timo Leppa said.

On Monday Kemira announced a programme to save €20m ($31m) in Finland which may lead to the loss of 300 jobs. Last week the company reported a 43% drop in its second-quarter net profit to €18.9m due to surging raw material and energy costs.
