TORONTO (ICIS news)--Petro-Canada has shut down the catalytic cracking unit at its Alberta refinery in Edmonton, causing gasoline supply problems in Alberta and British Columbia, the Canadian refiner said on Tuesday.

The unit was shut down last week “due to unforeseen circumstance”, the company said in a brief statement.

As a result, Petro-Canada had to reduce the volume of gasoline delivered to customers and associates, it said.

"We are working hard to minimise the impact of this situation and have established a dedicated team of employees to focus on this top priority," said refining vice president Dan Sorochan.

Despite the potential for short-term retail site outages, gasoline would continue to be available at many locations as the company was shipping in product from other sources while repairing the unit as quickly as possible, Sorochan said.

He did not disclose capacity or volume details.

Petro-Canada’s two refineries in Edmonton and Montreal have a total capacity of 255,000 bbl/day, accounting for 13% of Canada’s overall refining capacity last year, according to the company’s website.
