HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US exports of vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) in June totalled 52,589 tonnes, up almost 55% compared with 33,952 tonnes a year earlier, the US International Trade Commission (USITC) reported on Tuesday.

June exports were up more than 20% from 43,723 tonnes in May this year.

The major portion of business by US VAM producers now is done overseas because of the soft domestic market in the paints and coatings sector that has been pummeled by the real estate downturn,  market sources said.

Belgium, China, Canada and Germany were the top four destinations, accounting for 35,763 tonnes or 68% of exports.

US Gulf export prices for VAM in the past month have remained in a range of $1,200-$1,250/tonne (€804-838/tonne) FOB (free on board), according to data from global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.

US VAM producers include Celanese, Dow Chemical, DuPont and LyondellBasell.
