HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US polyvinyl chloride (PVC) exports were 727,500 tonnes in the first-half 2008, up by 69% from the same period one year earlier, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Tuesday.

Exports in June were 140,413 tonnes, an increase of 3% from May, the ITC said.

Canada was the top destination for US PVC exports in June, having received 28% of shipments for the month. Egypt was second, followed by China, Turkey and Brazil.

Industry participants said the year-on-year increase in US PVC exports is a result of producers seeking out new markets amid weak domestic demand for vinyl resin.

US PVC export spot prices were assessed in the $1,260-1,300/tonne (€844-871/tonne) FOB (free on board) US Gulf last week, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.

US PVC producers include Shintech, Georgia Gulf, Formosa Plastics, Westlake and Occidental Chemical.
