EPA grant to pay for Texas air-monitoring sites

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said on Friday that it awarded a $310,000 (€207,000) grant to a Texas environmental regulator, which will fund the operation and maintenance of air-monitoring sites in the Houston area and in a Texas town.

The town, Karnack, is about 240 miles (386 km) north of Houston. The other site is in Deer Park, a town close to Houston.

Houston is the nation's petrochemical hub.

Under the grant, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) will participate in a national network that will monitor rural and urban trends in air pollution, the EPA said.

Earlier, the EPA awarded a $643,000 grant to the city of Houston so it could pay for a chemical-emission detection system, the regulator said.
