HOUSTON (ICIS news)--A Caribbean weather system quickly strengthened on Friday into a Tropical Storm Fay, US meteorologists said.

Fay was over the eastern Dominican Republic, moving west at 14 miles/hour (22 km/hour), according to the National Hurricane Center. Fay's centre is on track to cross Hispaniola later today and pass near Cuba on Saturday night.

Fay has maximum sustained winds of nearly 40 miles/hour, the centre said.

Earlier, meteorologists expected the system to strengthen into a tropical depression, which has maximum sustained winds of 38 miles/hour.

Hurricanes have winds of at least 74 miles/hour.
