MUMBAI (ICIS news)--Akzo Nobel has opened a new site for the production and sales of protective coatings in Suzhou, about 80 kilometres west of Shanghai in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu, the Netherlands-based firm said on Monday.

“Last year we outlined our new ambition to achieve revenues in China totaling $2bn (€1.36bn) by 2012 and this investment will contribute in reaching this goal,” said Leif Darner, Akzo Nobel board member responsible for performance coatings.

Darner added that China was fundamental to its global strategy and expand its activities in the country.

“We have developed a business plan that will allow us to increase the capacity in steps over the next 10 years and eventually reach an output of 50m litres,” the firm’s marine and protective coatings general manager Bill McPherson said

He added that the €23m investment in the new facility was a sign of its commitment to China and stressed the importance of investing in laboratory facilities.
