HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Tropical Storm Fay remained on course to hit the Florida Keys, US meteorologists said on Monday.

As of 12:00 Houston time (17:00 GMT), Fay was about 20 miles (30km) southeast of Key West, Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm was moving north-northwest at about 14 miles/hour.

Fay is on course to pass over the lower Florida Keys in the next few hours, and it should be near the southwest coast of the Florida peninsula by Tuesday, the centre said.

Fay's maximum sustained winds remained at 60 miles/hour, the centre said. Fay should become a hurricane by the time it hits the Florida peninsula.

Given its current path, Fay will not likely disrupt crude oil and natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico.
