LONDON (ICIS news)--Tropical Storm Fay made landfall on the Florida west coast on Tuesday morning as all hurricane warnings were discontinued, US meteorologists said.

At 05:00 local time (09:00 GMT) at maximum sustained winds near 60 miles/hour (100 km/hour) the tropical storm hit Cape Romano, south of Fort Myers.

It was expected to continue its route across the Florida peninsula and turn to the north on Wednesday as its speed slows, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Isolated tornadoes were possible over southern and central Florida, the centre said.

A small number of chemicals plants are situated in the Tampa region, slightly north of Fay’s predicted path.

The storm on Monday missed critical US Gulf oil production sites.
